March 24 to 29, 2009
In the Spotlight this week is the 47th Annual ANN ARBOR FILM FESTIVAL (AAFF), one of the longest-running independent film festivals in North America. This esteemed, Academy-qualifying event showcases the finest in independent and experimental cinema in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Variety recently selected the AAFF from a pool of 6000 festivals as one of their “Ten Festivals We Love”, for its bold vision and rich history of championing filmmakers. Over the years, the AAFF has premiered the films and early works of industry luminaries George Lucas, Kenneth Anger, Sally Cruikshank, Barbara Hammer, Yoko Ono, Agnes Varda, Will Vinton, Andy Warhol, and many more. The Festival distributes over $20,000 USD worth of awards and prizes, many sponsored by accomplished filmmakers such as Ken Burns, Michael Moore, Lawrence Kasdan, and Gus Van Sant. The AAFF also selects more than two dozen films to showcase on its traveling tour, with screenings in more than 20 venues across the U.S. Filmmakers participating on the Tour are paid for each screening of their work.

MISSION AND OBJECTIVE
The Ann Arbor Film Festival supports bold, visionary filmmakers, advances the art form of film, and engages communities with remarkable cinematic experiences.
MORE ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Established in 1963, the AAFF has proudly screened rare and controversial films for 46 years, and has often landed in heated situations because of its risky programming. In 2006, state legislators revoked festival funding due to the inclusion of films deemed “too controversial for taxpayer’s money.” In response, the Festival defended its filmmakers by working with the ACLU to file a successful federal lawsuit against the State of Michigan for violations of the First Amendment.
Created as an alternative venue to a narrowly-focused commercial film industry, the annual week-long AAFF remains true to its original goal of promoting film as art, and honoring the artists who make it all possible. Today the Festival continues to seek works that demonstrate strong artistic vision and high regard for the art form of film. All genres, categories, lengths and subjects are considered, including avant-garde, animation, documentary, narrative, and experimental approaches.
