A campus tradition like no other, the festival screens films made by undergraduates during the past year as class projects. All films are shot on location and often feature the acting talents of Notre Dame students and faculty.

We will be holding a regular MAF meeting Tuesday, Jan.4 at 7 p.m. We always meet the first Tuesday of every month. We will begin hosting Making Movie Magic presentations (like we did last year) starting in February on various filmmaking topics, which will follow each regular meeting.

All meetings are free and open to the public at the Cellar Door restaurant below Downtown Ramada Plaza 213 W. Washington Street South Bend, IN 4660

From our friends at 3-Fest. MAF is proud to help sponsor their unique and local film event.

South Bend, IN -“3,” the international juried film festival of short shorts that had a successful debut last year will be held again in 2011 on February 3rd and 5th.   The application form for films three-minutes and under is now available at three.fest@yahoo.com.

2010 FESTIVAL A SUCCESS

The first 3 or 3fest was, by all accounts, a great success, with a packed house at Studio Fine Arts in Mishawaka.   Jim Yocum received the award for Best Film for his documentary on time, Tempus Incognito.   Tim Richardson won Best Local Film for his music video, an Eminem parody called I’m Sorry Llama.

The 2010 festival received over seventy entries, of which 27 were selected for screening. The films were music videos, animation shorts, experimental  films and documentaries by local and non-local  filmmakers from Mexico, Tasmania (Australia), France, Slovenia as well as from all over the U.S.  There was a large range, from an animated short about a magic turtle, to a poetic looks at the boys who train spiders to fight each other in the Philippines, to a music video based on the Go-Go’s hit song “Our Lips are Sealed,” to a documentary about “Maria the Korean Bride,” a performance artist who has been married in all 50 states. As last year, the audience will be given the opportunity to select the winning  films during the event itself.

CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL ADDED FOR 2011
This year, we are excited to announce that the festival will include a new component, an evening of children’s  films, part of our larger initiative to use  filmmaking to foster digital literacy and technical knowledge in our communities.  In conjunction with the festival, 3 is planning to offer workshops for adults and children through the South Bend Parks, as well as classes for elementary school students at Perley Fine Arts Academy. We believe that filmmaking gives kids a head start in the job market of the future, empowering them as storytellers and directors.

NEW AWARDS
For 2011, we’re adding two new awards.  First, an award for best film on the topic of sustainability or healthy food, sponsored by the Purple Porch Co-op.  We’re also currently fundraising for another award for films that show off South Bend neighborhoods.
