The Films
On Friday, February 8th, MAF held its Winter 2008 screening of local independent films and had a staged reading of several scripts. The films were great, however, the highlight for the crowd had to be the world premiere of “The Benevolent Banana”. The film was created as a part of MAF’s $100 movie club, where a script is chosen to be produced and funded by MAF for $100. Last year, at the MAF winter screening, Benevolent Banana was chosen to be the first MAF $100 movie.
As the first MAF $100 movie, Benevolent Banana leaves some pretty big shoes to fill, as it in no way came across as a $100 movie. This is, of course, thanks in large part to the enormous amounts of time and talent people gave to help in the filming and post production. Many thanks to ALL involved in helping create this great short, and it now begs the question…When will we see “Benevolent Banana 2: Fruitpocalypse Now!”? Okay, I just made up that name, but hey, we have to do another one, right? How can you not? It’s a guy in a banana suit! Who’s a superhero! It doesn’t get much better than that.

Staged Reading (and the winner is…)
After the films, we presented a staged reading of several scripts written by the MAF writers group. Each writer was given the task of writing a script for the event, however, there was a twist. The writers were randomly given a genre of film and a holiday, and they had to write a script based on a combination of the two premises. Sound like fun? Well, it was! We were treated to readings of scripts for the following:
A Christmas Western - The tale of a family just trying to have a nice Christmas in a land of outlaws.
A Sci Fi Thanksgiving - A wife is trying to throw the perfect Thanksgiving Dinner, however, her husband may “fowl” things up with his new Teleportation device in the basement. What happens when you teleport a Turkey?
A Comedy New Year - Father Time has found his one true love! However, at midnight, he turns back into a baby! Can love survive diapers?
A Horror St Patrick’s Day - Tales of terror from beyond the rainbow! This pot of gold is filled with blood!
A Noir Mother’s Day - What do you get your mother whose husband is cheating on her with some floosy tart? How about REVENGE!
A Silent Valentine’s Day - It’s a Silent Movie about a love that won’t be stopped…even if she’s married. Oh, and there’s even the built in modern remake, just like Hollywood likes to do!
After the readings, the audience was asked to vote for their favorite, and the winner would become the next MAF $100 movie. Well, the votes are in, and the winner is…(drumroll please)….
(drums are still rolling)…
(darn drums! somebody stop the drums!)….
(okay, I can hardly hear my self think what with these loud drums)…
(cool. Somebody just knocked out the drummer. I can hear again!)…
(wasn’t I supposed to be doing something?)…
Oh, yeah, the winner and the next MAF $100 Movie is:
A Silent Valentine’s Day! Congratulations to David Boyer, this year’s winner! Look for a Silent Valentine’s Day at an upcoming MAF screening! Thanks to everyone for their continued support!
