The story:

A mother daughter story told through the lens of a prison drama. As young child Julie Ann Mabry’s mother is murdered by her father. Julie Ann moves to Texas to live with her Aunt Marsha, Uncle Vic and cousin Britney. Attempting to reconnect with her deceased mother, Julie Ann becomes an Evangelical Christen, along with the rest of her family. Julie Ann is home schooled and kept in a secluded environment within the church yet adores her new religious life. That is until Britney returns home from brief attempt at college and family demons surface, resulting in Britney’s death. Realizing that she doesn’t want to end up like her cousin Britney, Julie Ann flees to live with 21-year-old Butch Yoder.

At 18, Julie Ann Mabry is sentenced to life in prison for the attempted murder of Butch Yoder. Once in prison Julie Ann forms relationship with three other female prison inmates. Her cell-mate Britney reaches out to her, inviting her to come to a prison writing class. Even though Julie Ann resents everyone, she trusts Britney with her life story. Britney becomes Julie Ann’s saving grace and solid emotional rock. Yet Britney keeps a secret from Julie Ann: that she has been a victim of a sexual violent crime at the hands of a male prison guard, Officer Richardson. Britney attempts to speak out to the warden about the abuse and is dismissed. As a result, Britney suffers an asthma attack and dies due to withheld medical attention.

With her sentence shortened and the chance to walk free, Julie Ann realizes that she has more freedom in prison then in the outside world. She only wants to two things: to redeem Britney’s death and see her Mother again. Knowing the consequence of her actions, Julie Ann murders Officer Richardson.

Now 43 years old, Julie Ann awaits her execution. Dragged to the chair, Julie Ann makes her peace with her decision. Her face is covered and the lights go out. Julie Ann opens her eyes in the chair; she has returned to the young girl that she once was. The prison is deserted and outside the walls her Mother waits to take her home.
